Work hours of an au-pair

The working hours will be distributed throughout the week according to the needs of the family during hours which are mutually convenient, but also into account the free time that you may need every day to attend Spanish lessons and meet with friends. Normally you will work 6 hours per day (from Monday to Friday) or 5 hours a day (from Monday to Saturday in the mornings) which can take place in the morning or in the evening. So you will have one (plus Saturday afternoon) or two days off every week (generally at weekends.)
Two or three nights of babysitting can also be included in the 30 weekly hours. Any hour of additional work on top of the 30 hours will be paid separately through an agreement made between the two parties.

Tasks of an au-pair

A part from all the tasks related to childcare (putting their room in order, bathing them, dressing them, feeding them, preparing light meals or snacks, taking them to and from school, helping them with their homework, playing with them, helping them out with learning your language) the family will also expect from you your collaboration in some light domestic duties: do the washing, wash the dishes, vacuum, dust, iron, prepare simple meals, help to prepare the dinner and set the table, etc

Treatment of the au-pair by the family

The family must treat the au-pair with respect and consideration, offering her, at all times, a dignified treatment almost as if she were a member of the family: she will sit at the table with the family or with the children and take part in main family activities.
Also the communication will represent a very important factor in order to harmony in the familial life. The au-pair must have clear that, for any problem or difficulty which might occur, she will be able to count on the support of the hosting family.
The free time of the au-pair will always have to be respected (taking into account the needs of the family as well) so that she can attend Spanish classes, socialize with other people, do some sightseeing, etc.
The au-pair will receive the most complete information possible about the family even before arriving in our country.
